Hi ! I was just wondering why you gave catching fire a 7.5?
I find it difficult to intellectualize ratings, which perhaps is a sign that I should not been posting them in the first place. But at their core, they’re just a reflection of how much I enjoyed or felt invested in the story. It’s the aftertaste.
I think Catching Fire is a good movie, particularly within its young adult niche. It was emotionally strong, even during the action section of the film. That, to me, is its greatest asset, and what separates it from most blockbusters. It doesn’t sacrifice the heart of the story for the thrill of quick cinematic violence. And most importantly, violence here has consequences. How often do you see a protagonist of a film of this, or any, magnitude, suffering from PTSD? Probably not often enough. Most sequels choose the blank slate. What happened in the past stays in the past. It is of no relevance to the present. But here you have repercussions, repercussions that cause character development. That’s something to salute, always.
The reason why I don’t rate it higher is because, at the end of the day, it added nothing to my life. It was time well spent, sure, but not much more. Its influence on me wore off almost immediately. It is not the kind of film that I will be revisiting in my head when I can’t sleep. It is not the kind of film that has imparted any sort of wisdom to me. It is not the kind of film that mirrored a reality I could identify with and thus feel close to. It’s good entertainment. I just want more than that.
oh gosh, it’s like picking a favorite child (among 459 of them…). Please don’t make me do it, I don’t want to leave anyone out ;_;
